The law has changed.

Instead of always having to go through a solicitor to get legal representation in court, you can now go straight to a barrister.

The new direct (or public) access regulations allow you to go direct to the lawyer who will be arguing your case before a judge, and will therefore have the best possible idea of how your case will look to a court and how best to present it. Not only does his expertise give you a tremendous legal advantage – it also saves you money. You will be paying only one legal professional instead of two. And that’s well worth considering now that the government is cutting the legal aid that once covered ordinary people’s legal bills.

That’s Chris McWatters explaining how and why direct access barristers could help you with your family law problem.

Chris is a leading family barrister at Garden Court chambers, a top family chambers at Lincoln’s Inn Fields in the legal heart of London. His areas of expertise are financial remedies in divorce proceedings, children’s private law, children’s public law, international child abduction and domestic violence. He’s acutely aware of the way in which parents can feel alienated by family proceedings, and goes out of his way to ensure that they feel they are fully understood, and that their case is comprehensively presented in court. He’s a qualified direct access barrister.

If you have a family problem that requires legal help, just email Chris and his support team by clicking on the CONTACT US tab above.

We’ll ask you to outline your situation (in confidence) and, if we can help you, we’ll then put you in direct touch with Chris.

You pay a fixed fee up front for that consultation, and receive a written, expert barrister’s opinion on the merits of your case and how you should proceed.

If you decide to carry on with your case, Chris will continue to work with you direct, advising on procedures and paperwork and appearing for you in court. Again, the cost of this will be fixed before you start. For an idea of Chris’s fees, please look at the information given at the FEES tab.

If you want further administrative and paralegal support with gathering documents and evidence and dealing with correspondence – the work traditionally done through a solicitor’s office – Chris’s team can also help. Hourly paralegal rates are  on our FEES page.
